Every Adventure Has Its Detour

This isn’t the post we thought we’d be writing right now.

After months on the road, winding through national parks, reconnecting with friends, and chasing sunsets (and bison), we’ve made countless memories we’ll treasure forever. But sometimes, life has a way of throwing in an unexpected detour.

Due to some unforeseen health challenges, we’ve made the difficult decision to end our journey early and fast-track our way back home. Right now, my focus needs to be on getting the care and support I need, and that means pressing pause on this adventure—at least for now.

It’s hard. It’s emotional. And it’s definitely not easy to say goodbye to the open road when our hearts were set on more miles, more moments, and more memories. But we are incredibly grateful for the amazing experiences we’ve had so far—from geysers and trail rides to cozy campground nights and spontaneous roadside laughs. This trip may be ending sooner than planned, but it’s been nothing short of unforgettable.

We’re hopeful this is just a temporary reroute—not a final destination. There are still so many places we dream of visiting, stories we want to share, and trails we haven’t explored yet. And when the time is right, we fully intend to hit the road again.

Thank you to everyone who’s followed along with our journey so far, cheered us on from afar, and shared in the joy, mishaps, and magic of life on the move. We’re carrying your kindness with us as we head home, and we’re already looking forward to the next chapter—whatever and whenever that may be.

Until then, we’re finding the silver lining… even if it’s through the rearview mirror.

  1. Sharon! So sorry to hear you are heading back early, but glad you are taking care of yourself. Big hugs, hope all goes smoothly and you feel better soon. Was so lovely to see you both. We just got back from Flathead Lake Montana yesterday, we were there for a week with my family reunion. So pretty there. I think you probably drove through a little of Montana. Take Care, Love Alice

    • Thanks Alice, I really appreciate your kind words and hope you had a blast in Montana. We DID stay there while we visited Yellowstone and had a great time. Talk to you soon!

  2. Sharon and Joel, we realize how difficult of a decision this must have been for you two. Carmen and I have discussed this possibility many times since we hit the road full-time back in the summer of 2016. So far we have managed to keep in check the ever increasig health issues we are experiencing by heading back to San Diego every so often to see the various physicians who oversee our healthcare. So far so good, but it is obvious as Carmen starts to ease into the 70s and I am firming there, that someday we will have to store or sell our Airstream and stay nearby our doctors. BUT… until then… onward. Glad to hear your adventure has given you so much joy and that if your circumstance change where it would allow you to hit the road again, you two are still considering another journey into this amazing lifestyle. Carmen and I are sending positive thoughts your way and hope it all turns out exactly as you hope. As I sit here in Vienna, Austria, on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary, away from our Airstream the first time since we started on July 18, 2016, we pray for both of you.
